Comprehensive eye exams provide your optometrist with opportunities to detect potential vision and ocular health problems. Since many eye diseases show no obvious signs until they damage your vision, regular eye exams are a vital form of preventive eye care.

At Optical Eyeworks, we look for signs of eye diseases like glaucoma and cataracts during each comprehensive eye exam. The sooner we can diagnose any issues you have, the sooner we can put together a plan to address them. Eye exams also give us useful information about your general health and may help us detect diabetes.

How Often Should
I Have Eye Exams?

Eye exams should be scheduled as follows, according to the Canadian Association of Optometrists:

Adults between 20-39: once every 2 to 3 years.

Adults between 40 to 64: once every 2 years.

Adults 65 or older: once every year.

If you have a family history of eye disease or specific medical conditions that require extra monitoring, you may need to have your eyes examined more often. After you have your first exam with us, we’ll let you know whether we recommend additional appointments for you.

What Happens During an Eye Exam?

Each eye exam generally takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending on your needs. If any additional tests are necessary, our team will make every effort to let you know before you come in for your appointment. If you have questions about getting ready for the exam, please contact us beforehand, and a member of our team will do their best to answer them.

We start each exam with a few questions about your medical needs and history, noting any pre-existing ocular or physical conditions you may have. We also note any medications you’re on and measure your prescription (if you already wear corrective lenses).

Next, we run a series of tests to measure:

Your visual acuity (how sharp and clear your vision is)
Your peripheral vision (how easily you can see objects indirectly)
Your pupillary response (how your pupils react to light)
The movement of your eyes

The condition of your optic nerve and retina
