Building foundations for healthy eyes & strong vision
Optical Eyeworks is dedicated to helping patients of all ages improve their vision and ocular health. Since eyesight plays a critical role in the development of young people, your children need regular eye exams as much as they need regular doctor’s appointments.
Vision problems can develop rapidly during childhood since children’s bodies—and eyes—are continuously changing. In fact, approximately 1 in 4 children experience vision problems. Fortunately, eye exams allow your child’s optometrist to detect these issues and take steps to deal with them before they cause significant challenges for your child.

Why are children’s eye exams important?
80% of learning is visual, so protecting your child’s eyesight can help prevent them from facing additional challenges in school. Clear vision and proper depth perception also help children play sports and games, promoting general health and social opportunities.
On the other hand, children with vision problems can become upset or develop behavioural issues, potentially leading to challenges later in life. Detecting these problems early allows you and your optometrist to address these problems and reduce or avoid their effects.
Eye exams designed for little ones
We strive to make our practice a soothing and welcoming environment for children. Our practice uses state-of-the-art diagnostic technology, but we also provide comfortable surroundings and train our staff to help kids feel at ease.
We’re always happy to answer your child’s questions or show them around our practice before their exam so they can get comfortable. Many kids who come to us for their first eye exam end up being so interested that they don’t want to leave the office afterward!

When should children have eye exams?
Every patient is different, but the Canadian Association of Optometrists suggests scheduling eye exams for children based on the following guidelines:
- Take your child for their first eye exam when they are 6 to 9 months old.
- Take them for another exam when they are between 2 and 5 years old.
- Take them for annual eye exams between the ages of 6 and 19.
Your child’s optometrist may suggest taking them for appointments more frequently, depending on their specific needs. Once your child has had their first exam with us, we’ll determine whether or not they have any conditions that need extra attention.
