What is a contact lens exam?
A contact lens exam is not the same as a standard eye exam.
A standard eye exam is designed to evaluate your visual needs and look for signs of ocular damage or diseases like glaucoma. On the other hand, a contact lens exam is designed specifically to evaluate your eligibility for contact lenses. If you want contact lenses, having a contact lens exam is the first step.
How does it work?
Generally speaking, there are 3 steps involved in finding the right contact lenses for your unique visual needs: the exam, the fitting, and the trial lenses.
Unfortunately, not everyone is a good candidate for contact lenses. Before we can write a prescription for you, we have to ensure your eyes are healthy enough. Once our optometrist is satisfied that contact lenses are the right choice for you, we can move on to the next step: the fitting.
Now that we know you can comfortably wear contact lenses, we need to determine your prescription. Your contact lens prescription will be different from your eyeglass prescription.
Using advanced techniques like corneal topography and wavefront aberrometry, our optometrist can measure the precise dimensions of your cornea, ensuring the best possible fit and visual performance.
Based on all the information we’ve gathered so far, we will send you home with some contact lenses to try. At this point, all you have to do is wear the contact lenses according to the instructions and determine whether they feel right and perform properly.
If the trial lenses are the right fit, our optometrist will write you a prescription. If not, don’t worry. We’ll give you another pair of trial lenses until we find the perfect fit.
